Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison:

We would like to call your attention to the Ft. Bliss National Cemetery which has experienced a sad transformation from a lush greenery landscape to a so called “Desert Scape.” My brother and myself and other Veteran organizations in the El Paso area have petitioned to return the “dignity and sanctity of our cemetery.”

We are enclosing petitions signed by citizens of El Paso and Veterans who desire to bring back the landscaping to a “lush green lawn” to better memorialize our fallen heroes, past, present, and future.

We are also enclosing pictures comparing the Ft. Bliss Golf courses and Ft. Bliss Parade Grounds which contain their own water sources, to the present condition and dismal National Ft. Bliss Cemetery. Water should not be an issue due to the fact that the Ft. Bliss golf courses and parade grounds are beautifully landscaped in “greenery.” In addition, the “Desert Scape” concept causes the sinking of tombstones during rainy/flash flood seasons. Due to these facts, that water no longer is held in place because there is no grass to seep it into the ground; instead it creates erosion. The previous greenery kept the cemetery following the “Desert Scape” concept as they are all landscaped with lush green lawns which honors the deceased buried there.

Sincerely,
